About Our Name

Dr. Edward James “Ted” Conroy, 
January 14, 1933 – February 20, 2022

Edward James “Ted” Conroy graduated from the University of Toronto, in 1954 before attending Osgoode Hall. Called to the Bar in 1958, he practiced from Sudbury throughout the Province of Ontario until his retirement in 2021.

Mr. Conroy was a founder of our firm, now named Conroy Scott LLP located in Sudbury’s Barristers Block located across from Sudbury’s Elm Street Court House.

Over the course of his practice, Ted participated in several breaking civil suits. In 1988, he was awarded the continuing designation of Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada.

He was conferred with a Honourary Doctor of Sacred Letters from Huntington University, served as Huntington’s third Chancellor for eight years and then became Huntington’s first Chancellor Emeritus.

Ted was as a prominent member of the Sudbury community with extensive community interest. He was a strong supporter of Huntington University, Maison Sudbury Hospice, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Joseph’s Villa and St. Andrew’s United Church.

During his over 50 years of practice, Mr. Conroy maintained special interest in crimes of violence and represented over 15 persons accused with murder and countless numbers of persons on lessor offenses.

Murray Alan Scott
July 25, 1948 – March 20, 2020

Murray Scott was called to the Ontario bar in 1977 and, as a partner of the firm, he maintained an active solicitor’s practice in real estate, business law, and estate planning until his passing on March 20, 2020.

Murray’s wealth of legal knowledge and experience ranged from residential and commercial transactions, to group acquisitions of leased lands and “retrofitted” subdivision involving Sudbury’s first Common Elements Condominium Corporation.

Murray’s corporate practice included formation of business and not-for-profit corporations, partnerships and joint ventures, as related restructuring, reorganization, acquisitions, and dispositions. He acted as counsel in the Northern Ontario conversion of an international oil company, local hospital transition, and Northern Ontario distance education re-organization.

Murray was very involved in the Sudbury community, having enjoyed a nineteen-year tenure on the Board of Directors of Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation. He chaired the Board of Governors of Cambrian College and was President of the Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers.

Murray was devoted to his clients, making it a top priority to provide the highest level of service with honesty and integrity, something our team strives to emulate in the Firm that bears his name.
